A mini guide to the pros & cons of traveling by train
We try to give an unbiased listing of several options for transportation to and from the airport. The train is a very common method of of getting to and from the airport, especially when you are planning to stay away for a longer period, or when traveling alone.
Price
As with coach travel, it is a good idea to book ahead when you plan on travelling by train. Although some train companies offer special fares to airports, others do not. The prices of a ticket may be double or even triple if you wait until the last minute. If you book at least 2 weeks ahead you should be able to find cheaper tickets. Generally speaking, the train is more expensive then a coach, but offers a bit more comfort for your money. Just sit down and enjoy the ride.
Comfort
Trains are considered to be very comfortable. The toilets are not always as clean as they should be, but in general they are cleaner than a coach toilet, and larger. Besides having the advantage of a cleaner toilet and relatively good seats, a lot of trains offer catering services on board for some light refreshments or even whole meals.
Convenience and Reliability
You don't have to worry about traffic but you will have to be ready for leaves on the line, weekend engineering works, signal failures and all of the other problems the UK train system seems to come up with. Even when the trains run beautifully they may not be the best option for those with several small children and loads of luggage. Be very careful to check the train times if your outbound or return journey is late at night as many trains don't run during the wee hours.
Security
Security is not really an issue, just make sure you dont leave your luggage unattended.
Conclusion
Especially for those who are planning a longer holiday or trip, and are willing to pay a little extra for comfort, the trains are an excellent option. For short trips, flights at odd hours, or those traveling with large parties, the option of parking your car at the airport is worth looking at.
